Fifty lake residents and local county and state staff gathered at Little Long Lake to build community among residents of different lakes, learn about water quality issues, and get involved in volunteer lake monitoring programs. The day began with MSU Extension's presentation on harmful algae blooms (HABs) and safe recreation and an interactive rainfall simulator demonstrating how heavy rains cause leaching and runoff from different land uses draining into inland lakes in the WLEB. Participants heard insights from experts about how to get involved and take initiative within their communities through the MI Corps Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program, the Lake Erie Volunteer Science Network, and from Little Long Lake's volunteer scientists who demonstrated water sample collection techniques.
