Ghana is a leading exporter of shea butter, an ingredient derived from shea nuts and used globally in a wide variety of products. Women in Ghana play a crucial role in picking and processing shea, and the commodity serves as a key income source for over 470,000 Ghanaian women. However, these women are challenged by the build-up of waste products from shea processing, called shea cakes, which consume their limited space. This Dow Fellows team partnered with nonprofit Ripples Ghana to research opportunities to upcycle shea cakes, addressing the environmental impact and enhancing women's income. The team’s final recommendations include using shea cakes in fertilizer, compost, and chicken feed. These strategies consider economic development, machinery availability, cultural appropriateness, community interests, and partnerships, aiming to provide feasible and adaptable solutions for Ripples and the women involved.
