The 2026 program will run from June 8th – August 14th. Applications have now closed.
For more information on the CLC Fellowship and application process, register for this informational webinar on January 16th or view the recorded one below from 2023.
Application Requirements:
- Complete contact information fields (visible once clicking “Apply” and logging in, see note below)
- Professional references
- Name, position, affiliation, email, and phone number for 2 references; we ask that at least 1 be a professor or academic advisor.
- References may only be contacted for applicant finalists and will be asked to complete a short reference survey rather than write a letter.
- Resume (2 pages maximum)
- Be sure to include current and previous academic institutions, and all majors and minors.
- Responses to 3 short answer questions, each 250 words or less, and submitted as 1 PDF packaged with your resume. These written responses carry considerable weight for the review process, so please be thoughtful in your writing.
- Describe your interests in sustainability and local government action, and how they relate to your short-term (summer research experience) and long-term (broader education and career) goals. If possible, explain how this fellowship will be transformative to your education and/or career.
- Which of the potential projects listed here most interest you and what would you bring to those projects? This could include courses you have taken, projects you have engaged in, or other skills (data analysis, graphic design, GIS, etc.).
- One of the Graham Sustainability Institute’s core values is inclusivity – intentionally engaging with diverse and representative perspectives because they are essential for just and equitable outcomes now and into the future. Please describe how you, based on your personal background, interests, and/or life experiences, will contribute to this vision during and after participation in the CLC Fellowship.
Note: If you are not a University of Michigan student, you will need a U-M Friend Account to start your application. Information on how to create an account can be found here. This is a quick process but be sure to save your login ID and password.
For all applicants, you will receive a single confirmation email when you have successfully saved your application for the first time. The email will include a link you may use to return to your submission and make edits until the deadline. Your saved application will be automatically submitted at 11:59 PM EST on January 21, 2026, and you will not receive a second confirmation message.
If you do not receive an initial confirmation email, your application was not saved properly and you should resave or contact the program coordinator directly at [email protected].
AI Policy: The CLC Fellowship adheres to the NSF SOARS program policy described here.
