Environment and Sustainability

Stephen Forrest's work includes finding solutions to the use and the generation of energy. In particular, he focuses on ultrahigh efficiency lighting using organic light emitting devices (OLED lighting), and solar power energy harvesting using high efficiency, lightweight and flexible thin film solar cells based on both inorganic (i.e. gallium arsenide) and organic photovoltaic cells. The research starts from understanding the fundamental physical properties of the materials used in these applications, to the growth of thin films of target morphologies, to the demonstration and utilization of advanced device architectures.
