Historically, American colleges and universities have functioned in ways that entrenched and further widened racial inequities in both education and society. Race and racism continue to shape higher education. Students will learn and employ interpretive and analytical strategies informed by anti-colonial/decolonial and anti-racist
frameworks, critical theories of race (e.g., hegemonic whiteness, colorblind and post-racism, and racial capitalism), racialized geographies, and other perspectives to critique the field and function of American colleges and universities.
