We live in an increasingly interconnected world. The supply chain of products we consume spreads out across the world. Intensified globalization leads to the spatial separation of consumption and production, and thus the spatial separation of consumption and environmental impacts embodied in production. Our consumption decisions influence, and are influenced by, productions and environmental systems in other places. It becomes increasingly important for industries and policy makers alike to understand the complex interdependence of consumption, globalized production system, trade, and the environment. Environmental input-output analysis (EIOA) provides a method of examining relationships between industries and evaluating global environmental impacts of consumption and production activities.
