Collaborative research to inform decisions that are good for our waters
The Water Center team works with the agricultural industry, environmental organizations, and agency partners at the state, provincial, and federal levels to inform approaches to managing nutrient loads impacting Lake Erie water quality.

Dr. Sarah Mills and her team of student researchers work across the State of Michigan to help communities make informed, proactive decisions about transitioning to renewable energy.
STUDENT FELLOWS + SCHOLARS
Supporting and mentoring the next generation of sustainability leaders
Water is becoming a scarce resource in some parts of Mexico City. A team of Dow Fellows worked with Isla Urbana, a local rainwater harvesting NGO, to find ways to improve water safety and access.
CATALYST GRANTS
Small investments that make a big difference in faculty research outcomes
The effects of climate change are having a dramatic effect on the northern coast of Ecuador. Working with regional research facilities and NGOs, U-M researchers helped strengthen communities’ adaptive capacity at the local level.
SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS CULTURE
Education and outreach to promote environmental literacy across campus
6,000+ students, staff, and faculty have completed training in sustainability principles and practices, forming the Planet Blue Ambassador network—leaders in the effort to build a campus-wide culture of sustainability.
CARBON NEUTRALITY GRANTS
Interdisciplinary applied research to lower emissions and mitigate climate change
Equipped with a tape measure and a GPS, students at U-M Flint calculate campus trees’ capacity to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Their work is part of a larger effort to inventory campus biosequestration capacity.
