Brian P. McCullough is Professor of Sport Management and Sport Management Program Chair in the School of Kinesiology, where he also serves as Founding Director of the Center for Sport & Sustainability and directs the online Master's program in Sport Management.
His research sits at the intersection of sport ecology, sustainability science, and organizational theory, examining how sport organizations internalize environmental externalities, navigate competing institutional logics, and translate sustainability commitments into measurable operational change. Much of this work centers on carbon accounting in sport, including Scope 3 fan travel emissions, team travel scheduling, and the emissions consequences of conference realignment.
McCullough is a founding scholar of sport ecology and works directly with the organizations his research examines. His research focus earned him an invitation from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat to participate in meetings to develop the Sport for Climate Change Framework. He also contributed to the US Global Change Research Program’s Fifth National Climate Assessment, which examined the impacts of climate change on sports, recreation, and physical activity. In 2021, Dr. McCullough was recognized as a Research Fellow by the North American Society for Sport Management.
