This Dow Fellows team worked with 3R Sustainability in Pittsburgh’s vibrant and growing Strip District to address mobility issues that compromise community safety and environmental sustainability. After exploring circulation and pedestrianization options, the team proposed street-level urban design interventions, focusing on the district's most unsafe intersections. To aid this process, the team mapped and analyzed crashes and created an inventory of potential interventions. Additionally, a map highlighting surface parking lots showcases the area's auto-centric focus and potential for alternative mobility. Sharing community stories aims to renew a commitment to a human-centric urban design focus. The team recommends interventions that would encourage residents and visitors to walk and bike, thus reducing congestion and improving overall mobility. This approach would also significantly reduce emissions from vehicular sources, contributing to a more sustainable neighborhood in the Strip.
