This team of Dow Sustainability Fellows partnered with the Washtenaw County chapter of the Climate Reality Project to assess the potential for county farmland solar installations. Their project aimed to promote solar development, anticipating environmental benefits, economic growth, and improved quality of life. The Dow Fellows’ goal was to provide transparent information to county officials, energy developers, and communities, fostering trust and enabling informed decision-making. The team conducted a literature review, stakeholder engagement, scenario modeling, and geospatial analysis. Their deliverables include a comprehensive report, a public pamphlet, and a GIS web-mapping application to involve residents in solar siting decisions. The team suggests that, with community engagement and transparency, it is feasible to offset fossil fuel generation in Washtenaw County and recommends ongoing efforts for public education and transparency in the solar siting process.
