Cultivating Success: A Comprehensive Review of The Nature Conservancy’s Sustainable Option Wheat Program in Saginaw Bay, Michigan (2023)

This Dow Sustainability Fellows team partnered with The Nature Conservancy to review its Sustainable Option Wheat (SOW) Program. Fellows conducted in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including farmers, wheat processor Star of the West, consumer packaged goods companies, retailers, and state government agencies. They also attended relevant events to gain insights from stakeholders and performed a market analysis of white winter wheat. Based on their findings, the team developed strategic recommendations for improving the program, exploring scalability, and addressing challenges. Overall, this work aimed to assess the SOW Program's effectiveness, identify lessons learned, and provide recommendations for future expansion.
