The Center for Empowering Communities (EPC) has provided policy recommendations to support a balanced and equitable approach to renewable energy development in Michigan, ensuring alignment between state and local priorities as the state pursues its renewable energy goals.
The recommendations advocate for scaling renewable energy projects by increasing smaller-scale solutions, such as community and rooftop solar, and microgrids. These projects would distribute infrastructure impacts more equitably, enhancing grid resilience and creating a sustainable energy landscape that benefits all communities.
The recommendations also emphasize the importance of including all Michigan communities in the renewable energy transition. Thoughtful planning, early engagement, and the active involvement of lower-income groups are essential for achieving procedural justice.
Lastly, the recommendations encourage a balanced approach to siting renewable energy projects, particularly in rural areas. While acknowledging the economic opportunities these projects can bring, the current siting practices may disadvantage smaller projects or those on disturbed lands. The recommendations stress the need for policies that support host communities while advancing state clean energy goals, ensuring equitable participation and benefits for all communities.
