Sustainability Cultural Indicators Program

Sustainability Cultural Indicators Program

A comprehensive study led in collaboration with U-M’s Institute for Social Research designed to assess sustainability knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes across U-M students, faculty, and staff over time.

The Sustainability Cultural Indicators Program (SCIP) is a groundbreaking effort designed to inform educational programs and campus operations at the University of Michigan. The program was launched in 2012 at the University’s Ann Arbor campus and was extended to the Dearborn and Flint campuses in 2021. Questionnaires are sent to students, staff, and faculty, yielding responses from more than 3,500 students and 1,500 faculty and staff members each cycle.

Questions cover carbon neutrality, travel and transportation, waste prevention and conservation, the natural environment, climate change, food, engagement, awareness, and ratings of campus sustainability initiatives. Outcomes from past surveys are available to the public.
