The Michigan Wild Rice Initiative Team, an ongoing collaboration between the federally recognized Tribes, state agencies in Michigan and others, is pleased to invite you to a Manoomin/Mnomen Workshop and Field Day on Wednesday and Thursday, August 30 and 31. This Workshop and Field Day will be held at the R.A.M. Center in Roscommon, Michigan. Travel stipends will be made available to those who need them. Early arrivals will have lodging evening of August 29. Lodging and meals will be provided.
As a traditional wild rice, Manoomin/Mnomen is culturally and spiritually linked to the Anishinaabe people and is a crucial part of lake and riparian ecosystems providing food to waterfowl, and nesting, resources and habitat to beavers and muskrats and other creature in lake ecosystems. As part of this workshop participants will:
- Visit Manoomin/Mnomen beds, via Canoe or Bus;
- Learn about the cultural, spiritual and historical importance of Manoomin/Mnomen to the Anishinaabe people;
- See demonstrations of Manoomin/Mnomen harvest and processing equipment, and engage in traditional harvest tool making;
- Contribute to a day of facilitated, interactive engagement with each other and:
- Learn about recent advances related to Manoomin/Mnomen
- Receive resources that advance common knowledge about protection and stewardship of Manoomin/Mnomen; and
- Provide feedback and input on a draft Tribal-State Manoomin/Mnomen Stewardship Plan
