The Graham Sustainability Institute Alumni Advisory Council, established in 2023, provides feedback and support to the program, represents alumni interests to the institute, and fosters professional development for students and alumni. Additionally, the council seeks to connect with the broader alumni community and establish mentorship networks.

Robert Brewer
Bobby, a 2019 Graham Scholar, is currently an environmental attorney with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. During his time as a Scholar, he also worked for the Graham Institute and was involved in the College of LSA’s Student Government. After graduating with a BA from the Program in the Environment in 2019, Bobby taught middle and high school science through Teach for America in Colorado. He returned to Ann Arbor for law school, where he co-chaired Michigan’s Environmental Law Society and researched climate litigation and environmental justice, and graduated with a JD in 2024. Bobby originally hails from Northville, Michigan and now lives in Washington, D.C., where he proudly cheers for Detroit’s sports teams each time they come to town.

Brooke Callaghan
Brooke earned her BA in Environmental Science from the University of Michigan in 2018 and her MPH in 2020. As the founder of Metrics for Mission Consulting, she partners with nonprofits, foundations, and community organizations to design evaluation frameworks, conduct research, and translate data into actionable insights that improve impact.
Her work is primarily centered in food systems, including the evaluation and design of innovative community food programs that promote dignity, access, and health. She brings experience across local and national initiatives, combining technical expertise with a strong commitment to community engagement.
A Michigan native and based in West Michigan, Brooke enjoys exploring local coffee shops, beach walks with her dogs, and gardening.
Savannah Colston

Savannah Colston
Savannah (Boerger) Colston graduated in 2020 with an MPH in Global Health Epidemiology, and her early career has focused on building a diverse foundation in One Health knowledge and practice across sectors, topics, and functional lenses. Her cross-disciplinary journey at Michigan ranged from collaborating on ethnobotany-led food systems initiatives in Ann Arbor as a 2019 Dow Fellow to catching mosquitoes to help understand the spread of dengue in Ecuador. Starting out in epidemiologic research on vector- and water-borne diseases at U-M and later the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Savannah's current scope of work leans more toward evidence-based implementation and scientific communication. Since 2022, her role at CHAI serves to translate progress, impact, and sustainability of the Malaria & Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) program into stories that resonate with donors, partners, and the public.
Though forever a Midwesterner, Savannah now lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with her husband, dog, and chickens. Whether traveling for work or down the road from home, she can usually be found chasing a new bird species to add to her life list.

Ruthie DeWit
Ruthie was a 2021 Scholar who graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in African-American Studies and a minor in Energy, Science, and Policy from PitE. After working for a few years in DEI, Ruthie returned to school and received an MS in Energy & Sustainability from Northwestern University in 2024. Ruthie currently works as the Director of Northeast State Affairs for the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) a national trade association representing over 1,200 companies, where she manages state level policy on behalf of the solar and storage industry. Outside of work you can find Ruthie swimming laps, playing pickleball, or trying new recipes. A native of Oakland, CA Ruthie now resides in Brooklyn, NY.
Elena Essa

Elena Essa
Elena is an alumn of both the Graham Sustainability Scholars Program (2019) and Dow Sustainability Fellowship (2020). She currently is Program Manager of Global Strategic Partnerships at Project Drawdown. In this role, she provides strategic management and decision-making support for philanthropic, business, and investor capital flows to effectively scale climate solutions. Prior to Project Drawdown, Elena worked at RMI across electricity and industrial decarbonization programs.
Elena holds a B.S. in Statistics (2019) and M.S. in Environment and Sustainability (Sustainable Systems) / M.Eng. In Energy Systems Engineering (2021). During her time at the University of Michigan, she worked with the U-M Graham Sustainability Institute, Energy Institute, and Erb Business Program, and held student office with U-M Ross Energy Club and Climate Blue. During her undergrad program, Elena studied abroad at both Iceland School of Energy (Reykjavik University) and Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment.
Elena is originally from Michigan and now lives in New York City. Outside of work, she serves on the board of a New York City–based music nonprofit and enjoys travel, reading, and playing/listening to music.

Arman Golrokhian is a strategic advisor, coach, and community builder passionate about helping people design more meaningful, grounded, and fulfilling lives. His work is guided by a belief that success is multidimensional; rooted not only in professional achievement, but also in service, gratitude, personal and collective growth, strong relationships, and harmony with nature.
Drawing from experiences across energy, sustainability, public policy, entrepreneurship, and mentoring, Arman brings an interdisciplinary perspective to both organizations and individuals navigating change and growth. Whether advising mission-driven ventures, facilitating conversations around life purpose, or supporting students and entrepreneurs in clarifying their direction, he combines strategic thinking with empathy and curiosity.
Arman is the founder of Strategic Energy Advisers (SEA) a consultancy focused on helping visionary organizations align long-term strategy with social impact. He holds dual master’s degrees in Public Policy and Sustainability from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Lizzie Grobbel
Lizzie leads the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) program that seeks to create shared value for Graham Partners’ investors and other stakeholders working across its investment portfolio and internally within Graham Partners. In this role, Lizzie is responsible for managing the firm’s ESG integration efforts across investment processes. Lizzie’s main areas of focus include implementing a systemic approach to assessing the firm’s businesses’ environmental impact and determining the impact a changing environment has on those businesses’ risk profiles; developing strategies to reduce environmental risks at both the firm and portfolio company levels; and driving communication surrounding progress on all ESG activities.
Previously, Lizzie spent four years at Quantis, a Boston Consulting Group company specializing in sustainability, where she co-led the U.S. Food & Beverage practice. She advised private equity firms and Fortune 500 companies on ESG strategies to manage risk, enhance resilience, and drive growth. Prior to Quantis, Lizzie supported an early-stage startup focused on employee engagement and organizational performance and spent three years with the Massachusetts state government as a Regional Planner, where she helped craft a 30-year strategic plan for a more sustainable Metro Boston region. She also completed a nonprofit leadership fellowship with New Sector Alliance.

Krutarth Jhaveri
Krutarth is a sustainability and climate leader with extensive experience in net-zero strategy and climate policy. He currently works at Apple, where he manages the company's carbon footprint, climate policy, and external standards engagement.
Prior to Apple, Krutarth worked at RMI, where he incubated emerging climate solutions—including carbon removal technologies, climate intelligence platforms, and battery storage—and developed system design frameworks to translate 1.5°C pathways into stakeholder-specific action. Earlier in his career, he developed novel material chemistries and life cycle assessments spanning automotive materials, solar cells, photocatalysis, and water filtration systems.
Krutarth holds dual master's degrees in Environment & Sustainability and Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, where he was a Dow Sustainability Fellow, Mertz Fellow, and Wege Bulkley Fellow. Originally from India, he is currently based in San Francisco, California.

Benjamin Morse
Benjamin Morse is the Director of Strategy for Campus Sustainability at the University of Michigan, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Campus Sustainability within the Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He previously served as a Senior Project Manager in the Office of Planning and Strategic Initiatives, where he served as the project manager for the U-M Campus Plan 2050 initiative and managed several strategic capital projects. Benjamin has been a U-M staff member since 2018. He holds two Master’s degrees from U-M—a Master of Science in Behavior, Education & Communication from the School for Environment and Sustainability and a Master of Public Policy from the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy—as well as a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism from Colorado State University. He was a proud Dow Sustainability Fellow in 2016, where he worked on equitable and sustainable transportation solutions in the City of Detroit.

Joe Murray
“My career has kept me very closely connected to U-M since graduation and I see this as a great way to stay involved and give back to a program that gave me a lot.”
Joe Murray grew up in Traverse City, MI before starting a transformative journey with U-M in 2012 that continues to this day. As a student, he held leadership positions with Circle K and FeelGood, and he served as the Graham Institute's Education Assistant during his time as a Graham Scholar.
He started working in the College of LSA's Advancement office after graduation in 2016, first as a College Connections Coordinator. Two years of traveling around the country, interviewing LSA alumni about their experiences, and sharing feedback with campus leaders inspired him to continue paying forward the opportunities that U-M had provided him. Since 2018, he has served on the college's major gifts fundraising team, partnering with donors to align their philanthropic goals with the needs of the college. After a decade in Ann Arbor, he moved to San Diego in 2022 to continue work with LSA alumni on the west coast.

Andrea Paine was a 2016 Scholar who graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Public Policy as well as in 2022 with a MS in Environmental Planning and Policy. Andrea works on water restoration and advocacy across the Great Lakes basin, first as a Program Associate for the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative and since 2018 as a Program Coordinator at the Huron River Watershed Council. Andrea originally hails from Manistee, Michigan and now lives in Ann Arbor.

“Making the leap from sustainability studies to sustainability career is challenging, and I am motivated to help emerging professionals and future leaders on their path. I saw an exciting opportunity for Graham Scholar alumni to play a greater role in supporting current students in this process, through mentorship programming and a stronger alumni community. I am also excited to help facilitate closer ties between the growing alumni network, and help alumni create or maintain ties to other former Scholars.”
Hannah Sherman is a 2016 Scholar, and graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Earth and Environmental Science. Hannah was active in on-campus sustainability efforts during her time at Michigan, including starting a student organization that redesigned the recycling program at The Big House, and serving as the undergraduate representative on the President’s Committee on Waste Reduction. During her time as a Graham Scholar, Hannah completed fieldwork in Nepal, conducting water quality and contamination source analysis research within the Solukhumbu Valley. Her findings were published in the Mountain Research Development Journal. Hannah is currently the Sustainability Manager at Rothy’s, a footwear company focused on using recycled materials. Prior to Rothy’s, Hannah worked at PVH (Tommy Hilfiger / Calvin Klein), and World Wildlife Fund. Hannah is an Ann Arbor native, and currently lives in San Francisco, CA.

“Graham was a formative and important part of my University of Michigan experience, and I want to help pass that experience on to the current scholars."
Nathan graduated in 2015 with a B.S.E. in Computer Science and a minor in German. After graduating, he worked in tech at Cisco and Apple in the San Francisco Bay Area before moving back to Ann Arbor in 2021. He has worked in customer-facing and business-facing roles, and now works for Tinuiti, a marketing agency. Throughout his career, he's enjoyed mentoring new hires and early-career engineers. He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and their two dogs.

Kara Steshetz is a 2020 Graham Scholar who graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering and PitE Environment minor. Kara currently works as a Product Development Engineer for Procter & Gamble in their Menstrual Care business championing for innovation that is better for the consumer and planet. During her time as a Graham Scholar, Kara studied the intersection of sustainability and business in both Iceland and Switzerland. Kara is originally from Southern California and currently resides in Cincinnati.

Ayako Tischler graduated in 2020 with degrees in Economics and Environmental Studies, and was also in the Residential College. During her time as a Graham Scholar, she completed fieldwork in Japan and assisted the City of Ann Arbor with a Green Housing Initiative Pilot. Ayako currently works at Xylem, where she helps utilities better utilize their data to optimize operations, make informed decisions, and reduce costs. Outside of work, she is passionate about finding community with Asian Americans in the environmental movement. She hails from the Great Lakes State and currently resides in Washington, D.C.
