A Graham Scholars team collaborated with Ypsilanti District Library on a project aimed to enhance the library’s summer programming with a focus on sustainability and STEM education. The team created three deliverables to support the library’s mission and integrate environmental awareness into its offerings.
The first deliverable included three STEM lesson plans, covering topics such as water filtration, backyard birding, and upcycling with Shrinkydinks. Each lesson came with detailed facilitator guides, worksheets, and supply lists, ensuring that the programming could continue with minimal training. The second deliverable involved testing and designing five vegetarian recipes featuring ingredients from the library’s gardens, with easy-to-follow handouts to support cooking programs and healthy eating. Lastly, the team created signage for the library’s summer lunch program to encourage proper waste disposal, including composting, recycling, and food redistribution, using child-friendly visuals.
These deliverables aim to foster sustainable practices, engage local youth in hands-on learning, and create a lasting impact on the community. The project has provided the library with important tools to continue offering environmentally conscious programming for residents of all ages.
