Brilliant Detroit, a nonprofit supporting families with children under eight, observed significant variations in energy and water utility costs across its 18 community-based hubs. To address this, they partnered with a team of Graham Sustainability Scholars to investigate the causes and develop practical solutions, aiming to operate more sustainably and efficiently.
The team conducted data collection and analysis, compiling electricity, natural gas, and water usage data for 13 of the hubs. The analysis revealed that heating was a primary driver of energy consumption, while water cost variations were linked to isolated, unpredictable events.
Based on these findings, the team developed a set of energy and water efficiency best practices that Brilliant Detroit could implement without extensive external consulting. The report and guide provided the organization with actionable insights to help staff and community members make informed, cost-effective, and sustainable choices.
