Working in partnership with the Ypsilanti District Library (YDL), this Graham Scholars team developed sustainability and STEM-focused lessons for the library’s summer youth program, which provides educational activities to elementary through high school children.

Recognizing educational disparities in Washtenaw County, the project aimed to bridge the learning gap by introducing sustainability education through hands-on activities focused on gardening. The team’s deliverables included ten detailed lesson plans and relevant multimedia content designed to spark curiosity and passion for sustainability in local children. The lessons were created to be adaptable and usable for years to come.

The goal of the project was to create environmentally-aware students who can positively impact their communities, fostering collaboration and communication with other sustainability-focused initiatives. The lessons were implemented over the summer of 2023 and saw record-breaking attendance, engaging 30-40 participants per program.
