Canopy covers at the university provide various environmental, economical, and health benefits to the surrounding area and residents. The increase in trees leads to greater carbon sequestration as they are helpful to release more oxygen and absorb extra carbon dioxide. This can increase cooling and negate the urban heat island effect. The cover will also increase biodiversity and resiliency against invasive species and serve as shelters for local animals. Depending on the location and species, it can reduce stormwater runoff or air pollution removal from vehicles. Canopy covers lower utility costs through the process of evapotranspiration which prevents heat exchange by reducing temperatures directly surrounding the building. Trees not only prevent warm air from getting into buildings during the summer, but also prevent cold air from entering during the winter. Healthwise, trees improve water and air quality and reduce toxic exposures via leaf uptake, leading to a safer and healthier community.
