In rapidly developing areas such as the Strip District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it is crucial to improve accessibility to enable a more functional interrelationship between citizens and businesses. Together with 3R Sustainability – a local consulting firm focused on ESG services – this Dow Fellows team determined a series of goals for change. Through a series of in-depth interviews with various community members the team was able to identify concerns related to accessibility, such as car congestion, local business resilience and walkability. In order to improve the mobility system of the Strip District, the results suggest: including piloting a new rebranded bus route, improving pedestrian and bike infrastructure incorporating bump outs and complete streets, establishing a dynamic pricing that eliminates competing for close parking spots and building an infrastructure that promotes slow driving.
