Together with the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR), this Dow Fellows team developed an engagement strategy to expand reach to local community groups to provide meaningful and equitable education and outreach programs. A needs assessment highlighted a range of groups NERR education programs were not reaching: Spanish-speaking families, community college adults, undergraduate students, educators in high-need areas, and special education students and teachers. The Dow team proposed a youth pipeline program which is a longitudinal internship that centers co-creation of specifically environment focused research, education, and career development. This team held several meetings with community groups and local partners to co-develop the program and build capacity to run the program in the future. This program will expand San Francisco Bay NERR partnerships and strengthen the overall education outreach initiative impacts.
