Working in 70 countries and with 1,100 affiliates within the United States, Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a worldwide organization that partners with local communities and homeowners to construct or renovate affordable homes with a vision of “[a] world where everyone has a decent place to live.” Through their newly launched Carbon Footprint Mapping and Mitigation Project (CFMMP), HFHI intends to reduce the carbon emissions associated with the material and construction of the residences built by their affiliates in the U.S. After a one-year pilot of CFMMP, HFHI partnered with a 2021 Dow Fellows team to assess and plan for broader implementation. Through a series of interviews, research, and data collection and analysis, the Dow team created for HFHI a green building standards guide, seven recommendations for CFMMP implementation, and a summary of stakeholder interview outcomes.
