Great Lakes

Great LakesThe Great Lakes – Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario – and their connecting channels form the largest freshwater system on earth. These freshwater seas shape our economy, contribute to our quality of life, and provide critical ecological and ecosystem services.

Situated in the heart of the Great Lakes basin, the University of Michigan Water Center supports and engages in research focusing on water quality, water quantity, coastal infrastructure, water policy, and more. Our collaborative research teams provide users in the region, such as community leaders, legislators, resource managers, and environmental NGOs, with usable information and practical tools to support and enhance the protection, restoration, and management of Great Lakes and its watershed.
