My work takes an interdisciplinary approach to addressing society's energy-related challenges, drawing on physical science, engineering, social science and public policy. Over the years I have examined energy efficiency in buildings, electric sector environmental impacts, consumer behavior and climate mitigation, with a recent focus on the transportation sector including vehicle efficiency and fuel-related CO2 emissions. I lead the Energy Institute's Transportation Energy and Climate Analysis project; direct the University of Michigan Energy Survey.; am a co-founder of the U-M Beyond Carbon Neutral research initiative and serve on the management committee for the university's Mcity center on connected and automated vehicles.
