Course of Study (the 11-credit sequence)
The Undergraduate Sustainability Scholars Program, for which we'll be accepting applications from sophomores in January 2013, is an ideal opportunity for undergraduate students with a passion for sustainability to tailor their upper-divisions years accordingly. The program requires 11 credit hours:
Credit-Hour Requirements:
- UC 327: Sustainability Interdisciplinary Thinking (Scholars Junior Seminar) – seminar on systems thinking and sustainability, which must be taken during the first semester of junior year (1 credit)
- UC 427: Sustainability Leadership Development (Scholars Senior Seminar): Taken during the fall of senior year, Scholars develop a personal sustainability leadership plan (1 credit)
- ENVIRON/RCIDIV 391: Sustainability & the Campus – Hands-on course focused on campus sustainability projects. Can be taken any semester (3 credits)
- ELECTIVE COURSE: From a list of approved courses (at least 3 credits, click here for list)
- GRAHAM-SUPPORTED, FIELD-BASED COURSE OR APPROPRIATE ALTERNATIVE: The Graham Institute covers student fees related to these courses (3 credits), up to $3,000, including spring/summer tuition:
- Conservation & Development in Cultural Landscapes: Fieldwork in Kenya
- Sustainable Development in Latin America
- Alternative & Fossil Energy: Options & Consequences
- Toward a Sustainable Environment in Light of the Changing Face of Rural (& Urban) China an intensive, three-credit, undergraduate sustainability course
- Sustainable Neighborhoods: Experiential Learning & Active Engagement in Detroit
- EcoQuest: Ecology in Action in New Zealand
Alternatively, Sustainability Scholars may apply for a scholarship (administered as a credit in the student's account) of up to $3,000 to fulfill this requirement through an alternative off-site, field-based experience.
